How to win an Erection Election

A first glance at the title of this post might suggest my using Engrish as a second language but the real story is even better.

With general elections coming up in Thailand on December 23rd some candidates have taken to giving out a little blue pill in exchange for votes to older male voters. This little blue pill that is used to combat sexual dysfunction is supposedly only available by prescription but is widely available over the counter in Thailand as well as widely counterfeited. Unfortunately it is also expensive and priced out of reach to the every day Thai.

The December election is the first since the coup and will return government to the people. With 4200 candidates from 40 different parties vying for 480 seats in the lower house this election will be highly contested and every little bit helps to stiffen up the votes. Vote buying is a tradition in Thailand with candidates usually giving out cash, clothes and whiskey especially in the poorer rural regions. Even though the Thai election commission has clamped down on giveaways making it tough for candidates to even give away t-shirts or free soda.

One political party to watch will be the PPP ( People Power Party ) which is widely considered to be a proxy party for ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his old Thai Rak Thai ( Thai Love Thai ) party which was basically dismantled by the coup government. Thaksin Shinawatra, who is now residing in England, recently purchased the Manchester City football club and on the eve of elections has signed three Thai football players. A first for a professional football team but seeing how much Thais love their football I bet it’s a hit with voters come election time.

No word on which party has been giving out the little blue pill but I’m sure it will make for some stiff competition.

  1. it’s too bad that our candidates aren’t allowed to give out whiskey. I know that would probably do it for me. Funny title, definitely made me stop :-)

  2. If our candidates gave out whiskey we’d all get drunk and write in Mickey Mouse for president…and it would probably be a better choice!

  3. Novel idea. Here in Antigua political parties give out all sorts of things. Haven’t heard of them doing this but I bet they would if they’d thought of it :)
