Thailand’s First Gold Medal at Beijing Olympics

Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakul holds Thailand's first gold in the 2008 Bejiing olympicsThailand’s first gold medal in the 2008 Beijng Olympic games was won by Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakul in the women’s 53kg weight lifting class on Sunday. She also set a new Olympic record in the female clean and jerk by lifting 126kg and besting the previous record set at the Sydney Games in 2000 by China’s Yang Xia.

The female weight lifting team is looking to walk away from the Beijing Olympics with at least 4 medals like they did in Athens in 2004 where they took home two gold and two bronze. Hopes were slightly dashed when on Friday two of the teams members failed to finish in the top three. Pensiri Laosirikul finished 5th and her teamate Premsiri Bunpithak was eliminated after no successful attempts were completed in the 48kg snatch and grab.

Wandee Kamaeim is the only member of the team who participated in the 2004 Athens games where she brought home the bronze. She competes on Monday in the 58kg weight class.

Congratulations on your country winning that gold medal! I watched swimming this morning….fantastic performance by the youngster from South Korea and a Japanese swimmer. And I was rooting for Michael Phelps too ;)
