In an ironic twist to the protests calling for the prime ministers removal two cooking shows proved to be his downfall.
Thailand’s prime minister Samak Sundaravejd has been under fire from all sides as of late. While the The Peoples Alliance for Democracy ( PAD ) have gathered in a force of thousands to protest and demand his removal from office…all it would take was nine judges and two cooking shows to make him go away.
Prime minister Samak hosted two commercial cooking shows on Thai television which violated the conflict of interest rules of the Thai constitution. Yesterday the constitutional Court heard evidence to that fact and at 3:40pm Thai time they gave their verdict. Samak has been found guilty and disqualified as prime Minister.
Samak’s Party the PPP will remain Caretaker of the cabinet until a new Prime Minister is chosen, which could be as soon as Friday. Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who is Thaksin Shinawatra’s brother in law, will become acting prime minister. This will surely upset the PAD who have stated they will stay in place until this government is thrown out.
The Peoples Power Party ( PPP ) have committed themselves to re-electing Samak as Prime Minister but there has been no word if he will accept. If Samak should decline the PPP has an alternate ready to go.
The Guilty verdict hinged on proof that the television station had payed Samak a fee for his appearance on the shows. Samak’s Lawyers argued he was only paid transportation expenses but ultimately the court found more merit in the T.V. stations paper work.
And the circus goes on…

been following a lil bit on the thai politics scene. and this is quite a surprise.
QuaChees last blog post..Happy Sad Song
I’ve been living in Asia (Vietnam) for a while and I know that 99% of officials are corrupted. So, chances that the prime minister will be punished somehow are very tiny…MY IMHO
I’ve been trying to follow this but we don’t hear much about it Canada. Honestly, removed because he hosted a cooking show? Its crazy! So much for Gordon Ramsay’s political career!
