The Vicious Circle

All our lives seem spent waiting for the next moment. I can’t wait till I can ride a bike, drive a car, get out of school, get a job, get married, and on and on and on. Some people seem content with this way of living, always waiting on the next thing and never stopping to enjoy the journey.

We get jobs and become imprisoned by them and this is where the vicious circle really takes hold. We begin bartering our lives away to attain the things we want and with the advent of credit we are willing to do so on a time plan. The job becomes our jail, we become scared and we become weak because of it. If you lose your job then all your dreams bought on the payment plan come crashing down and your boss knows this and uses it against you at every turn.

The reality of the work place is changing but the reality of how we perceive work and how we use work is not. It has, for the worse, all become about the money. These paper bonds are much stronger than any steel and they trap us in what becomes our own little vicious circle of paying on the dream with time.

Do what you love and love what you do. Don’t be scared to break these bonds because life isn’t about how much you worked but how much you lived. Now ask yourself this one question…

When your time comes and you are on deaths door will you regret that you didn’t work more?

    How so very true.

I was an incurable workaholic. When I learned about some of my seniors who died from brain haemorrhage,
, while jogging, while playing Tennis, etc., I decided that I would retire when I reached 50. And I did.

Since then I can get a life and do things that I was never able to do.

    You’ve written a good article.

I was sat thinking about how I really do not want to go to work tonight for 12 boring hours of overtime, then I read your post. Suddenly on a cold and damp English morning a visit to my local pub is looking a great possibility. Thanks for unravelling my indecisive thoughts and probably costing me £150 in lost revenue, mind you a trip to the bookies might sought that one out.

Money made from the bookie is much sweeter than money made from work…bet well and be happy.

Reading this reminded me of Les Miserables.

    Well written!

Well said, Talen, and very true. Working at something you dislike, and particularly if you are putting in an excessive amount of time, only buys things. And things aren’t really what a well-lived life is all about.

how we live our lives now is our own making — our choice, isn’t it not? for as long as we are enjoying every moment each day, i don’t think we’ll have regrets eventually.

I did just that in January 2008! (break the bonds) No more rat race, no more working in my own time for someone else’s benefit.

The joy of getting up each day in a beautiful country and where having to decide what to have for breakfast is about as hard as it gets.

    Great post and photograph.

Sometime in 2009 I’ll be doing the same…It’s telling when the quality of life is much better in what some people still believe is a third world country than in a western country.

I agree – this recession thing can give us an opportunity to sit up and look around – but we’ll all probably be too damn terrified to take it.

I think a lot of people are going to have that choice made for them unfortunately.
