[...] This weeks links (2009-01-19) Published January 19, 2009 links Archaic laws at work Melbourne writer jailed for insulting Thai royals FOR writing three ill-conceived sentences in a novel that sold fewer than 10 copies, Melbourne man Harry Nicolaides was yesterday sentenced to three years in a Thai prison. … The would-be writer was arrested at Bangkok Airport on August 31 last year on charges of lese majeste — the crime of maligning the revered Thai monarchy. A book he had written in 2006, Verisimilitude, contained a brief reference to an unnamed crown prince. The passage was deemed insulting and a complaint was made to the police. … – (2009-Jan-20) [The Age] Only 50 copies of the book were published, and only seven were sold. – (2009-Jan-19) CNN … Thailand has struggled for a very long time with it’s democracy and in this regard it has failed utterly. In the past two years Thailand has demonstrated to the world through it’s politics that it doesn’t understand democracy nor is it willing to. Democracy isn’t protesting the government until a judge steps in and calls for new elections…democracy is about compromise for the betterment of the country. Thailand’s politicians and judges think that by banning websites and arresting anyone that speaks about the royal family they will quell the voices speaking out, or perceived to be speaking out, against Thai politics. Instead they will spark more commentary and more outrage in the world at their archaic ass backward ways stumbling into the twenty first century. … – (2009-Jan-19) thailandlandofsmiles.com [...]

In a country known for kickboxing, weed and child sex slavery do you think these pompous asses really have any business throwing the book at Harry ? This is one of those pathetic repressive regime moves that needs to be squashed by the international (thinking) community. This story is infuriating.
