Chinatown After the Rain

Street leading to Chinatown flooded

While in Bangkok I was in full tourist mode. There were a lot of places I wanted to see and take pictures of, Chinatown was high on the list. When we set off for the skytrain the sun was blazing but by the time we made it to the river to catch a river taxi the skies opened up. My girl wasn’t very happy about the prospect of walking all day long to begin with but when she saw me smile she knew she would be doing so in the rain.

When the rain tapered off a bit we took the river taxi to stop 5 on the Chao Phraya river and headed to Chinatown.  By the time we got off the river taxi the sun was shining again but we were about to travel uncharted waters, literally!

The sewer system can’t handle hard rains well and the street leading into Chinatown had become a river. This, of course got me more dirty looks from my girl but once she waded through the first of many streets she started smiling again. After a long day walking we found a great restaurant and ordered some dim sum and duck fried rice.

I’ll be writing a nice long post on Chinatown in the future but thought I would share some pics for the time being.

Talen, what fun! I love China Town and don’t get out there near enough. Now with a new camera, I need to retake everything I took before.

I got caught in that rain yesterday and loved it. Crowding under overpasses with Thais walking and on motorcycles. Then running like mad with it still dumping down.

As I was near one of my favourte restaurants, to get out of the rain I stopped by (dripping wet) for an early dinner.

They can keep the hot sun from 2-4, just give me rain.

Love the photo of your lady dancing in the water. I got caught up in a similar flood in Udon Thani city last year and unlike you I didn’t enjoy it at all. At least you’re now in the normally dry resort of Pattaya so stick your Bangkok wet socks on the balcony and go and wet your insides. Chok dee krap.

Martyn…that’s not my girl. I tried snapping a pick of her and she hissed at me so I thought better of it :)

Later in the day she was happier but having to walk through flooded streets first thing in the morning made her none to happy for a bit.
