It’s been a lazy few days living in Mukdahan. With Songkran over here everyone is still in holiday mode and doing a lot of eating and sleeping. Pookie’s family lives about 10 minutes outside of Mukdahan city in a sleepy little village where most of the neighbors are related. There is nothing to do here at all except relax and of course snap photo’s.
The place has changed a little since my last visit. Young brother now has his own room…or small shack if you will, built next to the main house. Pappa has also built Mama a new kitchen. I’ve gotten used to squatting again but I will never get used to pouring cold water out of a clay pot in the morning as a shower. The only real problem I’ve had is the damned roosters and one in particular that I have vowed to eat before this trip is over.
Fortunately for me we will be heading to Nakom Phanome shortly where I will give up the village life for a hotel on the Mekong. I’ll still be visiting the village and helping on the farm daily but I will sleep in air con and not have roosters waking me!
Although there isn’t much to do in the village I’ve had a lot of time to re-connect with Pookie and a lot more time to connect with her daughter Fa, who can melt my heart with her giggle and and make me laugh with her devious little grin. She’s adorable and loves to play with me…It’s way too easy to fall hard for a Thai girl…especially when she’s only 3.
Have been eating some very interesting dishes as well…tadpoles anyone?
A few pics to show you my little slice of village life in Mukdahan…

Now you’re hitting the right spot with me, village life. I remember the cold bucket shower when we used to stay at Wi’s mothers house, the shock of the first slash of ice cold water was the nearest to a heart attack I ever hope to feel.
April time in the stifling afternoon sun the shower was a welcome relief but early morning and late evening it was a heart thumping experience. I used to stand there for a minute maybe two with the water bowl in my hands trying to summon the courage to chuck it over me….shhittt…..aaahhhh…bloody freezing cold.
I have always said that it’s an experience everyone should try once. A freezing cold shower in an outside bathroom full of mosquitoes. Wonderful stuff.

Wait till you hear about my farming experience…family couldn’t believe I was shoveling shit…kept saying “Falang pee baaa.
The cold shower in the morning is an eye opener but this afternoon it was wonderful considering how hot it was.
Talen what a great selection of photographs. I hate cold showers and dread visiting MTF’s home.
Mind you it also always makes me laugh when relatives visit here. They won’t use the electric shower, I have to put a large container of water in the bathroom so they can do it Thai style.
The flush toilet was also a novelty when they first visited especially for the kids, I will never forget finding Doy squatting on the seat.

Mike, I’ve experienced some of the same. Little brother came to visit us in the hotel once and used the bathroom…when I went in after him there were footprints on the seat
All in all the visit to the village and staying there was good but I am very happy to be in a hotel in Nakome phanome now.
Almost as in At Samat, I’m usually there.
