The Great Swine Flu Hoax Hits Thailand

Tokyo Airport

In the past several days the swine flue cases have trippled in Thailand to 151 infected individuals. Doesn’t sound very scary does it? Because it’s not! This whole swine flu phenomena has gotten out of control and I blame the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control.

Lets look at some facts shall we? The swine flue, or H1N1 as the Americans like to call it so they don’t lose sales of pork, has been reported in over 70 countries so far and has resulted in 144 deaths world wide. The World Health Organization has recently just declared the H1N1 ( I like this name better because of the American stupidity behind it) virus to be a Pandemic.

Let’s look at what Merriam Webster defines a pandemic as: occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population. Well the H1N1 virus has definitely occured over a wide geographic area but it most certainly has not affected an exceptionally high proportion of the population. Remember, Thailand has 150 cases and most other countries have at most a few thousand cases.

This supposed pandemic is based solely on it spreading to over 70 countries. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to surmize that by this standard the common cold, chicken pox, venerial disease and herpes are all pandemics and we are all going to die!

The reality is that with travel as cheap and easy as it is in the 21’st century everything is easily spreadable before the person germanating a specific disease even knows they have it. So far it sounds like the WHO and the CDC are doing a lot of crying wolf with nothing more to back it up than the fact that the virus could mutate and become more easily spreadible and deadly. Show me a virus and I’ll show you a virus that could mutate and become more dangerous…doesn’t mean it will.

Coming home from Thailand in May I saw the fruits of this propaganda in action. Many at Bangkok’s airport had masks on and in Tokyo 9 out of 10 people had masks on. But that wasn’t enough for the World Health Organization they needed this to be taken way more seriously so now we have a pandemic that has killed a whopping 144 people world wide.

To understand the enormity of this hoax being perpetrated on the worlds populace lets look at some very real and scary numbers now. In 1908 and 1909 a very real pandemic in the Spanish Influenza killed over 50 million people world wide  in less than a year. While the normal seasonal flu experienced world wide every year kills an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 people. H1N1 has killed 144 people.

Since 1908  there have been 5 flu pandemics declared :

  1. 1957: Asian Flu
  2. 1968: Hong Kong Flu
  3. 1976: Swine Flu Threat
  4. 1977: Russian Flu Threat
  5. 1997: Avian Flu Threat

There were some very credible threats in this list, namely the 1957 Asian flu and the 1968 Hong Kong flu. The rest have all been cases of the Sky is falling. The 1976 flu cited above was only found in one area of the world, Fort Dix in New Jersey, helluva pandemic that was!

Remember the Avian flu? You don’t hear much about it these days but a few years ago it was all the rage in up and coming pandemics that never were. The Avian flu put a big hurting on tourism in Asia for no reason other than supposedly smart people said there was a problem.

So far H1N1 has crippled Mexico tourism but I suspect places like Thailand and all of South East Asia as well as China will suffer greatly due to the perceived threat of very communal populations. The WHO and CDC should be held responsible for their actions when they paralyze the world community with less than credible threats and cause damage to economies.

Don’t get me wrong here. I believe the WHO and CDC should advise world governments and organizations on the possibilities of outbreaks and possible mutations but what they have done in the case of H1N1 is clearly irresponsible.

You had all better go out and purchase a mask and make sure you get the latest and greatest influenza shots when they are made available ( someone is making billions of dollars off of this) because you don’t want to be #145 in this pandemic that could likely see 200 people die before years end. Remember I warned you!

They are certainly freaking the population out. When I was in the UK in May, my Belgium vacation was in fear of being scrapped due to older family members putting pressure on me not to drive to Belgium.

I had an equal chance of getting the flu in the UK as I did across the chunnel, so…

The day before I was to leave, dear ‘ole mum come down with a rash of fainting spells and nose bleeds. When she refused to go to the family doctor, I knew it ok to leave as she is a practical person. I mean, if anything was ever seriously wrong, to the hospital she’d always go.

I’m betting that she didn’t want the family doc to give her a talking to about letting the flu fear take over her good common sense!

We are definitely lucky that this new flu virus turned out to be far less dangerous than what it seemed to be when it first showed in Mexico. At first everyone thought it will be a “killer” like the 1918 Spanish flu due to the many lives it seemed to take, and given the way it spreads now that’d be a reason to worry. But now this new flu even looks less strong than a normal flu, most of casualties in Mexico were from a “normal” flu. The only good thing worth of all the maniac is that now the ways of spreading viruses all over the world get visible to everyone.

Talen the logical part of me says you are quite correct. However there is also a bit of me that is concerned about a true pandemic and the abilities of some countries to deal with this.

If anti-virals were really needed right now then I would worry because while the UK has enough to treat half the population (soon to rise to 80%) Thailand has enough for less than 1% of the population soon to rise to less than 1%.

I think a lot of common sense and honest reporting is called for from governments and the media world wide. Education yes, panic inducing forecasts no!

Mike, The real problem is the fact that even if there is a mutated virus that spreads easily and kills…it will do just that.

What America and the European governments have on hand is for a known virus not for a what could be virus. By the time they come up with a remedy many people will have died.

There is still great concern that the Spanish Influenza could return and there is nothing to combat it. Researches have been trying in vane to figure it out even going as far as digging up 2 world war 1 vets in Alaska. They had hoped that the virus they died of would be trapped in their cells protected by the permafrost…but it wasn’t.

So, no matter what every country will be on a level playing field.

I have read the exact opposite, that from tissue samples of 1918 victims it was possible to reconstruct the virus, and it was a H1N1 originating from birds. See e.g. the Wikipedia article. But it’s still an open question whether the Spanish flu would be same devastating now as it was in the aftermath of the World War, and with no antiviral drugs or antibiotics to help secondary bacterial infections like today.

I didn’t realize they finally found a viable sample. The last I had seen on it was the digging up of the soldiers.

You mean I should unpack my box of 200 masks and carton of anti-virals all ready and waiting for next weekend’s flight into Bangkok? ;-)

You’re so right, it’s all the usual media hype, the trouble is when a real disaster happens we’ll have been so numbed by the soundbite headlines over the years we won’t react as we should.

Swine Flu is terrible, it has me scared that the world is going to be over run with the pandemic. I pray it is only a flavor of the month deal with the media.
