Above is a short video made by a Thai college student exploring the sexual attitudes of Thai teenagers and how the Thai culture is slowly changing because of it. While it’s not an in depth study the responses of the university students and adults to the questions posed are quite telling.
Obviously teenage sex has been going on since the beginning of time but in Thai culture it has largely been a thing that wasn’t spoken about in the past. Showing affection in public such as holding hands and kissing has been frowned upon culturally in Thailand but those taboos are changing with the younger generation.
Western influence is sure to have played some role in the changing attitudes but listening to the responses you hear a fair bit of safe sex talk which includes condoms and also the potential risks of teen sex such as pregnancy, something western society still finds hard to discuss openly.
Another interesting tidbit is one question about how University uniforms are being made more sexy by the students or being discarded altogether for more casual and sexy street wear and how at least in one mans mind that could lead to rape.
Like I said it is a short video but something I found very interesting.

Talen given the amount of teenage pregnancies around where I live I’m not sure contraception is on the agenda.

Mike, no doubt there are a lot of teen pregnancies…especially up in North Eastern Thailand.
Thanks for the link to your post…for some reason I missed that one….very good read and something else I have seen in action in Pattaya. Quite a few university students making their way through school by selling themselves.
I found it curious that the video was aimed at the English speaking public.
Was the video created for an English exam perhaps?

Talen here in Pattaya the obvious signs of a new breed of Thai youth’s attitude to sex is quite obvious and by that I mean Thai Thai relationships. In places like Udon Thani city it is slowly creeping in, very slowly but the change will come ( as will higher rates of Thai on Thai street crimes).
I think the big test of the new young Thai generation’s attitude to sex will hit a fairly solid brick wall in the smaller towns and rural districts. I can’t imagine young couples lovingly holding hands in Issan’s villages and being allowed to repeat the ‘offence.’ Not in my life time anyway.
Bangkok’s a different kettle of fish.

The fact that she calls this a “problem” clearly illustrates the differences between what I think I know about Thai culture based on my own experiences as a Falang and how the Thai people see their own culture.
After all, they are talking about sex between University students not grade school students.
As someone who attended Uni as an adult, all I can say is that from what I whitnessed there is very little truth in anything anyone says about sex and inhibition.
Why should sex be anything but a physical and anabolic reaction, its only countries where religion interferes with natural physiology that sex is seen and something other than a physical experience.
What you see in bars and night clubs is not indictive of the vast majority of the general population.
