Halloween 2010 in the Land of Smiles

holloween 057 Halloween 2010 in the Land of Smiles

Thai’s love sanook ( fun ) and nothing provides more sanook than a good holiday, even if it’s a borrowed one. Halloween fits the bill amazingly well and in certain areas of Thailand like Pattaya it is celebrated just as well as in the West. While you won’t find children going door to door looking for tasty treats you will find a great party atmosphere where dressing up is all part of the nights fun for adults and kids alike.

In the past Pattaya has gone all out for Halloween with parties and concerts at Bali Hai Pier as well as costume contests but this year seemed rather subdued with little fan fare to mark the day. The Hard Rock Cafe had two nights of parties but the final night on Halloween didn’t seem to be too festive, the bar was full but the party atmosphere didn’t seem there. Just across the street from the Hard Rock the city of Pattaya put on a small costume contest with live music that was fun for a little bit.

The real fun though usually happens on Walking street with falang and Thai’s alike dressing up and having a great time.

I spent the night walking around town from the Hard Rock Cafe all the way up to Walking Street and found more than a few people in the Halloween spirit as you can see below.

I knew that Halloween was soon, but now it seems I’ve missed it. I’m glad you made the best of it Talen.

      Paul,
it wasn’t too much to miss but it was a good bit of fun. Christmas is a round the corner so there is always that.

It sounds like you had a good time Talen. Even if it was a bit low key (my type of fun, actually).

Oh. Before I forget… YOU DID TOO! :-D

Cat, I had a great time. Funny thing was it was cool and breezy last night which made me think of Halloween at home :)

Halloween has never been my favorite holiday, but looks as if it could be a good time there in Pattaya. Of course pretty much any night could be a good time in Pattaya :>)

I’m patiently awaiting Christmas, which IS my favorite holiday and with the addition of Alivia this year should be extra special.

Steve, Halloween has never been big on my list either but watching the Thai’s have fun is infectious. Christmas in the land of smiles should be great fun as well. I know you and Golf will have a great time this Christmas with the little one.

Talen, not really my cup of tea, although we Brits seem to have imported the theme from the US these last few years.

The only Halloween round here was the usual Thai ghosts and spirits rattling the windows……or was it just the strong cool wind ;-)

Talen sorry I’m a little late coming in on this one.

I’ve never been in Thailand at the end of October and so I’ve not seen how they celebrate Halloween. Your photos from Pattaya show they do like to put on a bit of a show, and yet you say there was less atmosphere this time. The night looks fun and a great photo shoot opportunity, I must try and witness it myself one year.

I must also ask Wilai if Halloween is celebrated much up in Isaan. After all, there’s plenty of broomsticks laying around in the villages.

Martyn, as you know there is no bad time of the year to be here but during the holidays can definitely be fun. I remember asking Pookie about Halloween in Issan and she said they didn’t do anything but knew of the holiday.
