Bang a Gong… or Blow it Up!
By Talen on Mar 19, 2008 in Thai Culture
One of the coolest things about Thailand are the many ways to procure good luck! Some of them make you feel a little better about yourself while others can be great stress relievers…though I doubt I could ever be stressed in the land of smiles.
Every temple or sacred place and even some non sacred places have things to do for luck ranging from setting animals free to banging a gong or ringing a bell, but by far the best bang for my good luck buck comes from lighting off a brick of firecrackers in a huge clay pot…cool, fun and good luck to boot.
If you make it to Thailand make sure to give it a go

I quite like the idea of having a go at banging that gong. I wish we had similar stress busting schemes here in the UK.

Heh, all this mention of “good luck” and Thailand reminded me of how I was scammed by the famous Thai Gem Scam in Bangkok back in August 2007.

Yep, I’ve done firecrackers, gongs, bells, gold leaf on the head, gold leaf on the palms, the little strings blessed and tied around wrists and ankles…what else…oh the 20 baht note in my wallet even now that was blessed by the local abbot, lighting hundreds of joss sticks, candles and lanterns…so many different ways to gain luck, love, money and just about anything else you might desire.
