Net Fishing the Mekong

I really felt sorry for this poor guy. He must have been at it for 4 hours today and never caught a fish. He caught my attention though and there was something relaxing in the rythm of his casts. As you can probably tell I wasn’t up to much today other than eating and relaxing.
Then there was this guy and his fishing contraption…he didn’t seem to have any luck either.
So many fishing and the Mekong has been receding the past 2 weeks. I would guess it’s pulled back about 10-12 feet since my arrival in Nakom Phanome and you can literally walk to Lao from Thailand in many places.
But not all is lost. On my walk this afternoon I met a Thai man who has a small motorcycle repair shop who was thrilled to share his english skills and pictures of his big catch the night before…I took a pic of the remenants and I’ll leave it to you to decide if he really got a big one.

Talen a true fisherman’s tale if ever I heard one!

One of the best things for me about going up to the northeast of Thailand is that we take a couple of trips to Nong Khai. The Indo-China market has some restaurants and the fish is top class, eaten overlooking the Mekong. On a couple of occasions I’ve seen a storm whip up over in Laos and then race across the short stretch of water and empty the heavens on Nong Khai, an amazing sight.

Funny you should mention fish and storms whipping up Martyn. Today while eating fish for lunch on the Mekong A nice storm whipped up out of nowhere in Laos and then floated across the Mekong to us.
It’s still raining! Was going to take the whole family out to Thai BBQ again tonight but 14 people…a pickup truck…and rain isn’t a great combination.
