East West Relations Strained Over BunnyGate

Great Grandpop and Great Grandson and the Bunny

Don’t let the picture fool you this is a very serious situation that is rapidly heading towards defcon 4. The picture above is of my father and his great grandson taken during Easter this year. The chocolate rabbit, great grandsons first ever, was a present from my father and the source of the strained relations.

I was in Thailand during Easter and since I was sending photos home my sister thought I would love to see this photo, I did and it really made my day. When I got the e-mail I called Pookie over to see it and she thought it was adorable, and then the questions started.

“Teelac” what does baby have?” I tried the best I could to explain Easter and chocolate bunny rabbits but after chocolate the rest fell on deaf ears. Several times during my trip I was grilled on this mysterious chocolate rabbit and each conversation ended with decidedly confused looks.

Since I’ve been back home we talk regularly and then last night out of the blue, mid conversation, this discussion takes place:

Pookie: Teeeellaaaaaccc?

Me: *thinking quietly that the last time I heard this tone and draw I was lightened a few thousand baht and someone had 3 pairs of new Levi’s* Yes teelac?

Pookie: I want big chocolllate bunnnny…

Much conversation ensued about chocolate bunnies again and Easter and how there is this one window of opportunity a year for delectable treats of the chocolate bunny variety. Much of that conversation was lost after the word chocolate though.  Chocolate Santa’s were brought up since the season is quickly coming upon us but the sound in her voice told me that a chocolate Santa wouldn’t cut it.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a chocolate Easter bunny at the end of October? And if that weren’t bad enough then you have the whole logistical situation of getting a large chocolate Easter bunny to Thailand in one piece. Not to mention the fact that there are children involved which means multiple bunnies are now involved.

With Pookie and Fa’s birthdays coming up in December I better think of something fast….maybe I can melt a chocolate santa head and mold it into a bunny head.

I don’t know about the difficulties of finding chocolate bunnies in October. But I do know the problems you will have getting one there without it arriving in a melted blob.

Forget about pieces. Chocolate in Thailand does not arrive in pieces because the Thai post is not refrigerated. Chocolates are known to arrive in whatever shape they melt into.

Trust me on this. I am the queen of chocolate givers.

Just yesterday my Thai teacher dropped by to pick up lovely Italian chocolates from my last trip. Previously, it was Belgium chocolates.

When I send chocolates to Jay (several times a year), I now order from an Australian company who delivers via refrigerated trucks (if summer).

Ok, that is partically because I end up eating Jay’s chocolates…

From recent experience, chocolates that do not go straight into the fridge after arrival do not make it long in this hot and humid climate (just two weeks ago I forgot to put a small box of chocolates in the fridge and they mushed right there on my kitchen table).

Also, even if you could find a chocolate bunny in Thailand, what are the chances of the poor thing making it to Issan without the truck (at some point) sitting on some layby in the hot sun? Same goes for vitamins btw…

Nope. You will have to hand deliver Pookie a chocolate bunny. That is the only way.

Fly to BKK with your bunny, grab a cooler, fill it with ice, then drive all the way to Issan with the cooler placed in the shadiest part of your vehicle.

Buying her a real bunny would be cheaper by far. They may not be made of chocolate, but they still taste good.

      You’re not helping, Cat!

I do like the suggestion of taking it there personally though…but I fear the poor rabbit would meet an untimely demise at my hands during the 17 hour flight.

I do have one thing going for me. Easter bunnies have hard core preservatives in them to keep them from melting and if the stars align and the gods are with me there is a chance that the blob that arrives will still resemble an animal of sorts.

Western Easter Bunnies now have drugs? Will wonders never cease…

    In my day…

When I was growing up, I was in a country that did not celebrate Easter with special chocolates like they do in the US. So instead of hunting for coloured Easter eggs and chocolate foil wrapped shapes (eggs, bunnies, etc), we gathered in huge bars of Cadburys instead.

Let us know if your bunny makes it to Issan. Thinking… the Emporium in BKK might have chocolate bunnies around Easter and months after, but I don’t know how long after. I often notice chocolate Santas at weird times of the year, but they are not as popular as bunnies so there is that.

Come on Cat…all food is made of drugs anymore…just look at Twinkies and devil dogs.

I’ve noticed Christmas decorations for sale in Issan in April so nothing surprises me anymore. If only someone would open up a chocolate bunny shop in Mukdahan I would have it made.

I might just have to fly there…

Drugs. I guess you are right. But it’s not something in the news out here like it is out there. And I know what Twinkies are, but devil dogs? Sounds really, really bad.

‘If only someone would open up a chocolate bunny shop in Mukdahan I would have it made.’

There you go. Pookies next project – open up a chocolate bunny shop.

This company might show you the way (or even whip some up for you) http://www.crasiathai.com/

You can’t have Pookie run a chocolate bunny shop…that’s like letting the drug addict prescribe medicine.

I guess Devil Dogs never reached the esteemed position that Twinkies did…but you can lean about them here…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake%27s

and see pictures here or even better buy them…

‘I’ll bring you a box my next trip…’

Thanks! But, perhaps it is not a good idea. I am weak.

When I moved to the US, I went crazy with the chocolate boom booms and bang bangs and such.

    I even gained ten pounds.

Sure, we had snacks where I came from – a three tiered tray loaded down with goodies was generally rolled out during the morning and afternoon teas – so perhaps the drugs added to American foods changed things?

    Drugs crying eaaaaaaaaaaaat meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…

Good luck on that, Talen. I can offer you a motivational speech. How about: Get the bunny! If you want to keep your Original Equipment intact, whole and live happily ever after. (Here’s hoping Pookie doesn’t read English so well!)

A sample of working class English humour fuelled by a boring 12 hour shift of overtime, 20 cigarettes and a few beers.

    ‘No bunny, no honey.’

Only joking but I’ve wracked my brains and there really is no answer. After the long flight you face that rabbit is gonna look like a pile of buffalo d##g.

Too funny Martyn…It very well may be a situation of no bunny no honey. There is probably a way or two involving complicated shipping and dry ice but at some point it becomes very cost prohibitive.
