I love those places and I love going there with Thai friends. Great Sanuk and great prices. It's not just the carbon copy chains although they are a big part of it as well as the fast food joints. Haven't seen any rats in the eating establishments I've been in but that is because there are usually a few cats around. Cat, food and women have been known to rile people up throughout history.

The socializing is definitely a great part of eating Thai style. Martyn, there were chips at that meal…the one Thai girl I know loves falang food including chips and cheese sandwiches.

Talen a lovely write up and whilst I'm not the greatest lover of Thai food (I'm slowly being converted) your story has got me thinking about the wonderful socializing that accompanies most Thai meals. Families and friends gather and the chit chat is as free flowing as the red chillies. I do miss my restaurant meals with Wilai. Couldn't you use your photographic skills to copy and paste a plate of chips onto the top photo. Then I'd be totally missing Thailand. Ouch…this comment box is spicier than a papaya salad.

At least that has been my experience so for us Asians this is not different from what we are used to! I think the reason why you think it is fun is because it is different from what you are used to, chai mai? And that is a good thing :D shows open-mindedness.
