Pattaya Food Fun Fest

The one thing I absolutely love about Pattaya is the fact that there is always something going on and this weekend is no different as Pattaya is hosting the Food Fun Fest along the full Beach road promenade. If you love food, especially Thai food and snacks, then this is the place to be this weekend.

After a month of living cheaply during my living like a Thai experiment I was ready for a food fun fest …and believe me it didn’t disappoint. Not only will you find such classic Thai dishes such as curries and soups but the full array of fried foods, smoked meats and Thai treats. Not only is the food unbelievably delicious but it’s cheap as chips as well…good for the wallet not for the waistline.

While food is the major attraction of the Pattaya Food Fun Fest there is also plenty of shopping to be done with merchants selling every kind of product under the sun. Hand painted silk scarves, Hand carved wood, flowers, clothes, knives, guns, bongs and everything else under the sun. Where else but in Thailand can you find a merchant selling Orchids at 50 baht ( $1.70 ) a plant? Of course if you prefer the plastic plants there are plenty of those around as well, I don’t understand the plastic flowers myself as even someone with a black thumb like me can keep flowers alive in Thailand.

During the day the Beach road promenade is full of shoppers enjoying the bargains and catching some rays with a nice breeze coming off the bay. At night the promenade is jam packed and offers all manner of entertainment from DJ’s to live music all along Beach road, and for those of you that might need a drink have no fear as there are many makeshift bars all along the promenade. Just be careful crossing the street or you might end up like this guy.

Did you get any exotic food – like bugs and scorpions? Once when I was mao I ate what I thought was a big maggot from a bar maid on a dare, I think it was actually a silkworm pupa from watching that Zimmern food show. I swallowed it like a pill, could not get myself to bite down on it. Had crocodile at the local croc farm also. An old girlfriend bought a bunch of fried scorpions there also, I was very relieved when she said they were for her sister and not for us!

Rambone, I didn’t see anything really exotic at the food festival but there was a lot of great food. I did see and get something I hadn;t had before which was BBQ coconut skewers…big chunks of coconut grilled…it was really tasty.

I have had all manner of odd stuff though. I have eaten wood worm larva which looks like a huge maggot too…I bit into it and it kinda popped in my mouth with warm juices…not a fan. I do like bbq scorpion though…kinda tastes like a really crunchy crab to me but hella menacing to get into your mouth. Crocodile is delicious and I’m hoping a friend brings by some red ant larva to me tomorrow as promised as that is also dii mak mak :)

Another surprise Thai food experience? I went to new Central Pattaya Mall, floor 5 or 6, and what do I see, an A&W Root Beer Restaurant. Now in Madison, WI we used to have these all over the place, but now thay have all gone out of business. I was upset I no longer knew where any were. But now never fear, it’s only a thousand or so miles away in case I get the urge. And it was such a primo location too, on the end of the mall with an outlook view of Pattaya Beach. Complete with frosty mugs and giant bear in an orange sweater by the door. Ditto with a Mr.Donut in the food court, I had to go there at least once because where else could I find a Mr.Donut near my home town?

Rambone, the A&W was anice surprise for me too when I first found it. I don’t like donuts much though, but I hear Krispy Creme is coming to Pattaya soon.

Talen I like the picture of the two Mr Bean’s spilling their wares over Beach Road.

Pattaya is great any time of the year but throw in a festival and it’s even more fun. The likes of the Food Fest are the kind of things critics of Pattaya tend to forget to mention. The city has so much more than sex on its plate, although sex does tend to completely fill the dessert bowl. You can’t beat something sweet after a good hearty meal.

Martyn, the Mr. beans weren’t actually spilling the car in the background flew out of the side soi and smashed into the cart…Thai people cannot drive.

Pattaya really does have a great lineup of diverse festivals and fun activities throughout the year…and the desserts ain’t bad either :P

“I hear Krispy Creme is coming to Pattaya soon.”

Wow, that’s bad news for Thailand and worse news for the piggish farang who waddle down beach road.

Gene, Krispy Kreme has been in Bangkok for quite some time and always has lines out the door…all Thai’s. Personally I don’t care for donuts but I guess some people do.
